The first jury session for the choreographer Marius Petipa monument competition will be held on July 15th 2008 the White Hall of the St. Petersburg Committee for Culture. The jury will review and deliberate on the competition entries submitted within the period between March 11th and April 29th 2008.

Representatives of the Foundation: Farukh Ruzimatov, People’s Artist of Russia, artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater Ballet Company; Zorina Myskova, Head of the Foundation Board of Trustees, Counselor of the Minister of Culture and Mass Communication of the Russian Federation; Nikita Dolgushin, member of the Foundation Board of Trustees, People’s Artist of the USSR;
Representatives of the St. Petersburg administration: Anton Gubankov, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for Culture; Vera Dementyeva, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for State Control, Utilization and Protection of Historical and Cultural Landmarks; Georgi Sheremetyev, Chief Artist of St. Petersburg, Vice Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for City Planning and Architecture;

The Marius Petipa monument project is managed by the Farukh Ruzimatov Foundation ‘The Renaissance of the Dance Art’ in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Mass Communication of the Russian Federation; the St. Petersburg Committee for the City Planning and Architecture; the St. Petersburg Committee for State Control, Utilization and Protection of Historical and Cultural Landmarks; the St. Petersburg Committee for Culture; the St. Petersburg branches of the Russian Union of Artists and the Architects.
Marius Petipa is a world-renowned choreographer, ballet dancer, and professor. He created ballets which became a part of the world classical choreography treasury such as “Paquita”, “Don Quixote”, “Coppelia”, “The Vain Precaution”, “Esmeralda”, “The Sleeping beauty”, “La Sylphide”, “Cinderella”, “The Nutcracker”, “The Swan Lake”, “The Little Humpbacked Horse” (“Konyok Gorbunok”), “The Magic Mirror”, etc.
The competition for the best monument design was announced on March 11th, the day of the 190th birthday anniversary of M.Petipa. The exhibition of the designs submittals opened on April 29th, the International Dance Day, in the exhibition hall of the St. Petersburg branch of the Union of Artists of Russia and continued throughout May.
The monument is expected to be erected in Ostrovsky Square by the entrance to the Theatre Museum, along the east wing axis of the square (nearby the Vaganova Academy of the Russian Ballet).
